11th anniversary of Worcester Cold Storage fire

Eleven years ago, Boston firefighter Robert M. Winston was on a bus headed to Worcester for a sad assignment.

It was a day after the massive Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse Co. building caught fire Dec. 3, 1999, trapping and killing six Worcester firefighters — Firefighters Paul A. Brotherton, Jeremiah M. Lucey and Joseph T. McGuirk, and Lts. Thomas E. Spencer, James F. Lyons III and Timothy P. Jackson.

All of the men’s bodies had not yet been recovered, and Mr. Winston said the 50 or so other firefighters from Boston had a daunting task ahead.
