On the pronunciation of Worcester

Ever wondered why Worcester is

pronounced the way is is?

So was a reader of the Grammarphobia blog.

And, while the authors can’t fully explain why our linguistic forbears chose to spell a syllable that sounds like “ster” as “cester”, they do explain that the pronunciation (and spelling) go back at least as far as Shakespeare.
